This news article is the first media report that I have seen using the word “preservation” by those seeking to keep the status quo regarding Confederate Memorials. I hope its use does not negatively impact the work of those who have been quietly laboring for years to preserve the stories of our past. In general, I am not in favor of state laws that prevent local communities from doing the sometimes difficult work of engaging with and making decisions around local historic sites and monuments. There are many examples where a healthy process has brought out the best in us and produced a better product. May that be the case in Alabama, Tennessee, and even right here in Virginia.
